"As a young boy, I was different from my friends, more philosophically inclined. I arrived very early at the central belief that the only true definition of success is to be happy with this short life we are given. I have been and continue to be a seeker, and of one thing I am certain; If I am to be happy on any given day, then I must have a sense of purpose, to feel that the time I spend is making a difference. I invest my time carefully, finding and collecting moments of happiness along the way.
Construction arrived in my life as a revelation. It was a simple project, building a large boat dock with a friend. I was a good mechanic, but had never built anything out of wood in my life. My friend took the time to show me how the dock would work, the materials we would use and why, the upside-down sequence and logic in which we would build it in, and how we would get it into place. Even better, we drew the plans for the dock together, detailing every joint and bolt. This was my first experience with the magic of design.
The planning work was new and stimulating, but nothing compared to the excitement of the actual hands-on building of the dock. I learned how to hold a skillsaw, to draw and cut a straight line, how to measure and square a frame, why and where to add stiffness and support, how to pound 1,000 nails and not get tired, and a many other things each giving pleasure in the learning and doing.
The revelation came when we rolled the constructed dock over, floated it into place, and bolted it up to the pilings. Nothing before that moment in my life equaled the depth of satisfaction I felt at seeing a completed work by my own hands. At that moment I understood for the very first time...the satisfaction of creation. In that moment, I knew what I wanted to do with my life."
