This is our 26' Panga "Pez Gordo", built in La Paz in 2001. We think this is the perfect Fish/Dive/Camp machine for the Sea of Cortes (we just bought a new one!). The hull is sturdy and safe, the deck layout is perfect for both fishing and diving, our large bait-tank keeps live bait fresh all day long, and the bow platform is large enough for (2) to sleep on, with tons of storage under bow and seats. The boat comes with a 2-axle trailer that was completely reconditioned in July 08, with new: bow winch, tongue jack, keel rollers, bow bumper, bearings, and leaf springs.
The motor is a 2001 Yamaha 115hp 4-stroke (model F115AE7), reputed to be one of the most reliable 4-stroke workhorses ever constructed. The controls have a "governor" that allows only 80% of full power, so the engine has always been conservatively operated (the governor can be easily removed if you wish). She has been lovingly serviced and maintained by our excellent mechanic in Loreto. The 115 horses are adequate to drive the boat at 28mph with 4 large men, full tanks of gas and gear. Best of all... we average 5.5mpg of gas... this is an incredibly efficient boat in terms of fuel usage.
Pez Gordo comes with simple, low tech systems that are perfect for operating in Baja. The fuel system consists of removable plastic tanks that can be removed in seconds for a trip to the gas station... each 50-liter tank gives 60 miles of range, and we typically carry (4) tanks. The steering and throttle are cable controlled. The only electronics are a VHF radio and Eagle 480DF Fishfinder (not shown)... in the Sea of Cortes, these are all the electonics you need... simple is better in Baja. The large bait tank fills and drains automatically, and keeps bait frisky all day long. The photo showing the deck removed (below, left) is from 2 months ago... we had a soft spot, so we pulled everything and reconstructed stringers and deck. All interior fiberglass is brand new and very well done!
